Humans are fallible. There are safety systems in place that would have prevented this recent train derailment, that can help prevent aircraft accidents, and that can now keep distracted/drunk/tired drivers from veering from their lane or rear-ending the car in front of them.

I’m glad this tech exists, but if there was no mechanical failure, the blame rests first on the engineer, not on the lack of this safety system, just as a distracted driver is to blame in an accident, not the car company for not providing a self-driving system or the government for not mandating it.

In this age of ever-decreasing personal responsibility, I’m afraid that a future where humans are deemed too irresponsible (by the government and/or insurance agencies) to pilot a motor vehicle is not too far off.

Are all train drivers called “engineers” over there?

Pretty much. Not sure if it applies to subway/transit drivers, though.
